Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 3rd July 1905 in which the following was discussed: the Director exhibited to the board the painting by John Lavery which they had agreed to purchase during the previous meeting. He also exhibited to the board a painting, "Holy Family" [NGI 772] donated by Mr Leopold Hirsch, which they accepted. The Director submitted for purchase a collection of 12 drawings in pen and pencil, by Charles Grey [NGI 2586, 3782-3792], which was sanctioned. The Director was also authorised to purchase a pencil portrait of Charles Stewart Parnell by John D. Reigh [NGI 2587]. Letters were read to the board concerning the Milltown Collection, and after visitng the collection in Russborough House, the board once again conveyed to Lady Milltown their pleasure with the collection, which was about to be placed in the Gallery, and informed her that there would be four more rooms within the Gallery at her disposal for the collection, meaning all of the top-lit rooms in the new building would be marked for her collection. The board informed the Lord Lieutenant that they had appointed solicitors to deal with the removal of the Milltown Collection from Russborough House and its transfer to The National Gallery. A delegation of three members were instructed to set up a meeting with Lady Milltown, so that more direct relations could be established between the board and her Ladyship. The Director sought the permission of the board to purchase an autograph letter of Archbishop Croke together with one from Mr Bodkin of the Freeman's Journal, proving its authenticity.
