Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 24th March 1904 in which the following was discussed: The Director submitted a list of purchases which was approved by the board. The Gallery was offered the death mask of Daniel O'Connell , which was accepted, along with a small, full-length portrait from Mr Grattan by an unknown artist and a small folio volume,"? memorials" was donated by Lord Powerscourt for the Gallery Library. Viscount Powerscourt offered a portrait of himself by Miss Purser which was to be hung in the boardroom, which the board accepted [NGI 561]. The Under Secretary to the Lord Lieutentant informed the board that the solicitor to Lady Milltown had told their office that the Milltown Collection would be ready for transfer in May of next year. Two pictures by Angelica Kaufmann, bequeathed to the Gallery by Miss Brabazon had been returned to the executor as a result of a resolution agreed upon at the previous meeting. The late Miss Anna Louise Davys Magrath of Cartron, County Roscommon had bequeathed £400 to The National Portrait Gallery, with correspondence from her solicitors detailing this. The Director informed the board that the late Miss Annie Callwell of Herbert Place had bequeathed works of art to the Gallery, and named the 37 artworks. The Director also received a letter from the solicitors of Miss Callwell, stating conditions of the bequest. Mr Lane posed a hypothetical query to the board in regards to a possible loan for an exhibition of Irish artists in the Guild Hall in London, in which they agreed to loan three pictures if desired, as long as they were fully insured.
