Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 14th February 1889 in which the following was discussed: the Duke of Leinster was appointed to the board in place of George Hodson. Seven pictures submitted and purchased from Christie, Manson, and Woods, prices included. Eight more works listed as offered and accepted including a portrait of Denis Daly in pastel by Hugh Hamilton [NGI 6993] purchased from Ms Darby for £15.15.0. The Director read the draft report for 1887. Visitors of 80,359 noted for the year. Eight pictures listed as purchased for the 'general collection'. Eleven more listed for the National Portrait and Historical Collection. Both include prices. Four Mezzotint portraits listed. Seven donations listed including £1000 from Edward Guinness for the purchase of 200 Mezzotint portraits from the Chalenor Collection. Each with a connection to Ireland. £694 spent. Discussion of introduction of autographs to the Portrait Gallery. At the urgent request of the Committee of the Arts and Manufacturing Exhibition in Manchester, it was agreed to loan to pictures to them. The Royal Academy returned two pictures that had been on loan. A list of paintings restored and/or glazed presented.
