Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 3rd August 1899 in which the following was discussed: a list of artwork submitted by the Director and approved for purchase, and a list of gifts donated to the Gallery. The Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery in London had transferred a portrait of Archbishop Boulter to The National Gallery. The Director also submitted three items for purchase. The terms of two existing board members had been renewed, and staff vacancies in the Gallery had been filled. The Director read his annual report for the year 1898, and it was unanimously adopted by the board. The Director was instructed to approach the board of the National Library in regards to a collection of prints that were held by the late J.R. Joly that would be a good addition to the Gallery, and could then be viewed by the public. The Director also reported that their experiments in presenting different kinds of paintings without glass had failed, and it was necessary to replace the glasses in order to keep their surface in a presentable condition. He would aim to keep the whole collection under glass.
