Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 11th November 1897 in which the following was discussed: the Director read a letter he had sent to the Board of Works in regards to the conditions agreed upon at the previous meeting. The estimate for the year 1898-1899 came to £2504 and was approved by the board. The Director read a letter from the Royal Hibernian Society informing the board that Mr Stephen Catterson Smith had been elected a Governor and Guardian of The National Gallery. Three purchases were approved by the board. The Director received a letter from the Countess G. Milltown in which she offered a large collection of pictures and works of art as a gift to the Gallery, on certain conditions. She expressed the desire to keep the collection as a whole, and exhibit it as a separate collection dedicated to her late husband, the sixth Earl of Milltown. The gift and these conditions were accepted by the board. The Director was once again instructed to press the Government about an extension to the Gallery, especially in light of receiving Lady Milltown's gift, and that no less that £10,000 should be added to the estimate for the year 1898-1899 to allow for this.
