Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 10th September 1897 in which the following was discussed: the Director informed the board that the Board of Works was proposing a statue of the late Sir Robert Stewart to be placed in Leinster Lawn, which had originally been assigned, and still remained, property of The National Gallery. There is correspondence between the Director and the Board of Works discussing this. It was resolved that the board would not oppose the erection of the statue, provided it would be erected "in front of the central false window, facing south of the eastern block of the building, at a point equidistant from the wall of the building and the exisiting footpath." Another key condition provided by the board was that the statue could be removed at any time in the future should the Gallery require space for an extension.
