Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 21st April 1881 in which the following was discussed: correspondence with the Treasury sanctioning the purchase of a picture by Frans Hals [NGI 193] for £400. Discussion of a fire that was discovered and 'extinguished with the greatest rapidity' by employees of the gallery before the fire brigade arrived. Application approved for an allowance for a Ms O'Brien who is 'incapacitated by broken health'. Approved the purchase of a picture, "Macklin the Actor" by Sam de Wilde [NGI 307] for £790. Some discussion about building levels and works. The figures for attendance were presented for 1st January to the 31st December. Broken down to 7 categories. Total visitors 83,344. There is a list of five paintings purchased and some donations of paintings recorded including one from the Hellfire Club [James Worsdale, NGI 134].
