Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 3rd December 1863 in which the following was discussed: a letter was read from Mr Robinson with more names added to his list of those gentlemen who favour the opening of the Gallery on a Sunday. The list included members of Parliament. Mr Pigot undertakes to amend the byelaws to permit opening on Sunday afternoons. A report by the Director was recorded in the minutes, the Director outlines details of purchases and buying trips with names and prices of paintings. Also listed are three paintings purchases 'in a very neglected state'. Some discussion of wet weather and dampness at the Gallery resulting in taking down Mr Dargan's portrait ["Portrait of William Dargan" by Stephen Catterson Smith [NGI 141]]. There is a list of donations received with names. An investigation is ordered on the 'probable effect of heat' on the ceiling of the large gallery. Mention of 'suitable uniforms' for the porters.
