Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 4th August 1860 in which the following was discussed: this was a special meeting. A letter to the Treasury was read requesting the granting of casts from the British Museum. A reply is read in which the British Museum assent to the granting of casts. Discussion on the carving a panels in the National Gallery. A 'simple scroll ornamentation of an artistic character' was deemed most appropriate. A picture "The Adoration of the Shepherds" by Bassano [NGI 367?] was donated by a Mr Henry West. Some paintings were offered for purchase by Mr Richard Rothwell. The Secretary was instructed to seek the price for Rembrandts' "Night Watch" and Titians "Assumption of the Virgin". Mr Baschets' red and white chalk cartoon after 'Raffaelles' School of Athens was purchased for £20.
