Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 27th August 1859 in which the following was discussed: appointments and reappointments of governors noted. Mr Mulvany [Became Director 1862, died 1869] and Mr William Brocas elected to the board [Brocas elected to NGI board 1859, died 1868]. Rules regulating board members agreed including that the twelve members appointment should be for five years. Three to be appointed by the government and two by the RHA. The board assert that they require £2000 - £3000 to purchase pictures 'of a character and class calculated to educate and satisfy public taste'. As in previous letters to the Treasury the board compare the £30,000 grant to the Scottish Gallery to their own modest requests. £100 donation from the Earl of Eglington noted. A report by Mr Mulvany was read about a purchasing trip to London and Cheltenham. Mention of the 'Northwick' pictures. 6 paintings are mentioned with catalogue numbers. The estimated cost - £3100. It was agreed to pay Mr Mulvany £37.14.0 for his trip.
