Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 22nd January 1859 in which the following was discussed: a letter was read from the Royal Horticultural Society agreeing to provide marquees for the laying of the first stone. It was agreed that the first stone would be laid at 3pm on the 29th January (1859). The board agree the text of a long letter to Lord Lieutenant Archibald William about the upcoming ceremony. A donation from Thomas Berry is acknowledged - a copy of "Descent From the Cross" by Rubens [NGI 1941] and"Ruins" by Panini [NGI ?]. Note: between the adjournment of this meeting and commencement of next offcial meeting there is an entry from January 29th with a transcription of the address by the Lord Lieutenant and a description of the laying of the first stone of the new National Gallery.
