Minutes of board meeting held on 5th December 1857 in which the following was discussed: a letter was read presenting "The Last Supper" by Tintoretto to be donated by Lord Powerscourt ["The Last Supper" by Italian (Venetian) 16th century, [NGI 4001]] plus a £10 donation. 6 further donations totalling £53 were acknowledged [NGI 77, NGI 70, NGI 238?]. A picture attributed to Caravaggio ["Victorious Love" by Rutilio Manetti [NGI 1235]] was offered for £13 and accepted. Some disagreement between the board and the members of the RDS regarding the application for funds and the building plans previously approved by the governors. A letter was proposed to be forwarded to the Treasury in response to their decision to decline a grant. They emphasise the benefit the new National Gallery would be to them progress of art in Ireland and to the social condition and improvement of the people' of Ireland. |
