Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 6th October 1856 in which the following was discussed: a letter from the Treasury refusing to provide a grant for the purchase of any pictures, also noting that the £25,000 provided to the Scottish Gallery (brought up by the board in the requesting letter) was only for building works and not paintings. The board draft a nine page letter in response seeking a grant of public money. A 24 page letter is drafted intended to appeal to the general public for donation of funds and/or artworks for the new National Gallery. They ask for the 'the hearty and general cooperation of the nobility and gentry of Ireland'.
