Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 23rd June 1856 in which the following was discussed: special meeting called to receive a communication from the Dargan Institute. It was communicated that the Dargan Institute found it 'desirable to hand over the £5000'. Three conditions were stipulated including that a 'bust or statue' of Mr Dargan should be placed in a prominent position and that the name Dargan Institute should be placed at the entrance. There is the suggested inscription recorded. A discussion then established that the project is committed to the name the National Gallery of Ireland. This was explained to the members of the Dargan Institute who agreed to waive the naming condition. A compromise was agreed to have a 'Dargan Halle' containing a portrait of Mr Dargan (currently being painted). A bust or statue of Mr Dargan will also feature in the Halle or any other suitable place.
