Gerard Dillon (1916 - 1971)
Description
Collection contains an eight-page letter from Gerard Dillon to Madge Connolly during his stay on the Aran Islands. Letter includes descriptions of his preparations for upcoming exhibitions, daily life on the Aran Islands and eleven sketches he made in the margins. Dillon was a self-taught artist born in Belfast. His trips to the west of Ireland heavily influenced his angular and exaggerated style as well as inspiring his work through the landscape and people. Later in his career, a more dreamlike quality emerged with the symbol of a harlequin present in many paintings. Dillon exhibited widely in Ireland, Britain and America.
